De Smet, South Dakota has been rather active online this year.
A brand new website for the town of De Smet is drawing national attention and it’s just recently gone live.

Unofficially Roland Frank Rydstrom, who has been working at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society in De Smet this year has been a very active user and great about sharing what’s going on in De Smet (note: it’s his personal feed and also included is non-Laura stuff, etc.). Rydstrom helped them unveil an official Facebook and plan on adding an official Twitter for the Memorial Society before the season starts next year.
If you haven’t yet, be sure to sign up for their e-club to get a bit of Laura delivered to your in box every month on the Memorial Society website.
Don’t forget to check the Ingalls Homestead and the De Smet Pageant which has a website and its own Facebook page.

Is there enough to do in De Smet to keep three kids busy for a day or weekend? ages 2,7 and 10
Where is the most kid-friendly place to stay?
Absolutely, Jennifer. I’m actually working on a family travel guide for De Smet. At the very least, there’s Ingalls Homestead. Families can easily spend an entire morning or afternoon there and still feel like it’s not enough.

There is lots to do – in DeSmet you can go to the Surveyor’s House which will take some time. There is camping by Lake Thompson with fishing/boating. There are outdoor swimming pools in DeSmet (or in Arlington).
And if you need a little house break and want to do a short roadtrip, there is a new children’s museum that just opened in Brookings – home of the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits.
