Cassville Ferry

As part of our conference countdown, I’m adding another to the series of postings of possible places you might want to add to your Wilder conference trip. Some will be Laura related, others are just kind of neat tourist spots. Enjoy!

The Ingalls Family were often traveling through areas where there aren’t any bridges. They crossed rivers by ferry. You can too. Much safer than driving across the frozen river, the Cassville Ferry runs from Cassville , Wisconsin, to Millville, Iowa, across the Mississippi River. It connects two National Scenic Byways; the Great River Road in Wisconsin (which eventually goes to Pepin) and the Iowa Great River Road. Ferries serviced the area as far back as 1833 and this particular ferry is the oldest operating car ferry in Wisconsin. This small car ferry gives you a good feeling of what it would be like to take your covered wagon across a river ferry with other travelers. It’s really a memorable experience and a great way to get an up close look at the Mississippi River.
