I heard in the news last week that there was a genuine Chinook wind moving through the country – if you got an unusually nice weather the last week or so, it just might have been the Chinook. 🙂
That means spring is coming and it’s time to make plans for gardens and for summer trips. So to help you with that this is the first post in a series about homesites and where you can find them on the web.

Pepin WI is located on Lake Pepin, a widening of the Mississippi River. It’s location means that people from the Twin Cities use it as a weekend getaway spot and for that reason it has an unusually nice selection of restaurants, bed and breakfasts, and artist shops.
Check out these resources to plan your trip:
- Official Village Website
- Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Pepin

UPDATE: The Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Pepin just launched its own Facebook page.
Pepin is one of the homesites that I visit the most. Find a round up of my posts about Pepin on my personal blog here. Some businesses that I enjoy visiting and mention in various blog posts are listed here, find more options on the Official Village Website under the appropriate tab (shopping, where to stay, etc.):
- T&C Latane Blacksmith and Tinsmith
- Harbor View Cafe
- Garden Pub and Grille
- Homemade Cafe
- Pickle Factory
- Sail Pepin (follow Pa’s wagon tracks across the lake when it isn’t frozen)
Sarah S. Uthoff blogs at TrundleBed Tales; look for her on Facebook, Twitter , YouTube, Blog Talk Radio, Google+, LinkedIn, and Academia.edu Laura Ingalls Wilder Legacy and Research Association, Acting President.

Though I was born in Wisconsin like Laura (and always felt very special due to that), I visited Mansfield and DeSmet before I made my way to Pepin a few years ago with my daughters.
Though a small site Laura-wise, it is a wonderful place to visit. I loved seeing the replica house nestled amongst the rolling green hills, and walking along the shores of Lake Pepin. The LIW Museum is a wonderful place to see as well. And ending the day with a stop at The Pickle Factory overlooking Lake Pepin is a must!
